Revelations from a survey on Channel 7’s Today Tonight showed that some popular brands of tinned tuna contain significantly less omega-3 fatty acids than is recommended daily for good health. This alarming result has reinforced the need for consumers to be conscious of the difficulties getting optimum nutrient levels of omega-3s from diet alone. Russell Setright, naturopath from radio 2GB’s Get Well Health Show, reinforces supplementation as a form of nutritional insurance. “This survey shows that it is difficult to be absolutely certain that you are getting what you need from your food,” said Setright. “By supplementing your diet with a good quality concentrated fish oil supplement, such as Blackmores Omega Daily, you can be sure of the amounts you are consuming. “As omega-3s are building blocks of all living cells they are essential to general health particularly that of your brain, heart and joints.” The evidence supporting the use of omega-3 supplements in various areas of health is strong. The University of Western Australia found significant advancement in hand-eye co-ordination in toddlers whose mothers took fish oil supplements during pregnancy[i]. Researchers have also found that maternal supplementation with DHA (an essential omega-3 fatty acid) can improve cognitive development and IQ scores and reduce allergy incidence in offspring[ii].
