L-carnitine in its most physiologic active form (L-acetyl-carnitine) is critically important for those with HCV infection.

L-Carnitine has proven benefits for balancing blood lipids. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be lowered and the beneficial lipid HDL (high density lipoprotein) increased by supplementing with L-carnitine.

It is common for those with HCV to have blood lipid values demonstrating an increased cardiovascular risk. Often fibrosis and scarring of the liver itself can cause chronically elevated liver enzyme and blood lipid levels.

However, nutrients including L-carnitine can help repair the liver resulting in a reduction of fibrosis, inflammation and a reduction in cholesterol and triglycerides.

Supplementation

Dosage range is 500-1,500 mg a day as L-acetyl-carnitine (the preferred form) or L-carnitine.
