Tasmanians with hepatitis C are being encouraged to seek treatment and stop the disease from spreading. About 3,500 Tasmanians are living with hepatitis C but only a fraction seek diagnosis and treatment. Kevin Marriott from the Council on AIDS, Hepatitis and Related Diseases hopes a new ad campaign will help dispel a long-standing stigma. "Hepatitis C is mainly among injecting drug users so people who've actually shared injecting equipment," he said. "80 per cent of people who have contracted hepatitis C are from that background. "But that doesn't mean they are currently injecting, they could have just injected one time or shared equipment once and that would be enough." http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/01/12/2790280.htm |
