Croat with two strains of hepatitis has recovered without treatment PDF Print E-mail

A man in Croatia has reportedly recovered from two strains of hepatitis without having undergone any medical treatment.

Doctors in Zadar say city resident Sime B., 33, is a medical phenomenon.

He was infected by hepatitis B and C viruses 17 years ago while using drugs, but local doctors say the viruses are no longer present in his body.

"This is a very rare case. It happens with hepatitis B that the immune system can spontaneously rid the body of the virus. This time, it happened with the hepatitis C virus as well. The patient was very lucky," Dr. Miro Morovic commented to the daily Slobodna Dalmacija.

After learning he was free of the viruses, the man decided to stop using drugs.

"It came to me just like that, and, in a moment, I decided to change my life and to stop using drugs," Sime B. told the newspaper.

Hi, my name is Dann, I am 49 and live in Seattle. I was diagnosed with hep C back in 1997 or '98. At the urging of a friend I went on a active milkthistle program for a few years. I slowed down the intake of alcohol and took better care of myself. I had two (blood screens?) over the last 12 or 13 years and they showed no sign of hep. I just got (12/2009) results of elevated levels again. Can hep C kind of hide for awhile and then rear it's ugly head again? Thanks.

Hi Dann

Which blood screens did you have? Did you have a HCV RNA PCR test?
When you say 'elevated levels' are you referring to raised ALT?
